What can I do?

1 Corinthians 12:4-7 (NLT)
"There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other."

ADVENT
During the Advent season, we look back and remember Christ's first coming. The promised Messiah came to earth as a baby. Jesus Christ came humbly, lived perfectly, died brutally, and rose victoriously.
So Advent is a time of remembering the baby at Bethlehem. And yet Advent is also a time where we long for Christ's second coming. The day that he will come back to rescue the people whom he has redeemed by his blood. As a church we joyfully celebrate Christ's first coming and patiently anticipate his second.

November 2016

1 Peter 2:11 (NIV)
Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.

Are we living like foreigners and exiles?
It was good to return home (to Siem Reap) in October from home (with family in the UK). This is how most of us expats live. It is a challenge being “home but not home” at the same time! In the UK I found people asking me “Where are you from?” My initial response is usually “Well, that is not a simple question!” A follow up with “Well, I’m from Northern Ireland with a family home in England but currently living and working in Cambodia!” can often develop an interesting conversation.
In his first letter, Peter tells his readers (2:9) that they are “a chosen nation and a royal priesthood”. As a result, the people of God are “foreigners and exiles” in this world. He calls us all to holy living and to withstand sinful desires (2:11). We need to allow the Holy Spirit to highlight those areas in our lives that need changed. But we need to pray that God will be at work in us so that His love and grace will shine out to others.
We celebrate 10 years of CFSR this month. Praise God for his faithfulness in this time. Pray for those who will be preaching; pray for our Leadership team as they have discussions with possible pastors for 2017 and beyond. Pray, too, for the ongoing finances of CFSR and the challenge of taking on a new pastor. We are resuming providing monthly offering details in the Bulletin to allow us to be better informed as we pray about our giving.

October 2016

Randy Odom writes, "In the northern hemisphere, October is the first full month of autumn. Autumn signals the maturity of the current year as harvest is celebrated in many countries around the world. In Cambodia, we see the beginnings of the rice harvest. This provokes a spirit of thankfulness to God for rain from heaven that has brought this joyful time of reaping.

"At CFSR, October paves the way for a time of celebration and thankfulness, as well. In October we welcome back our pastors Ivor and Carol Greer, following a well-deserved break with family, friends and supporting churches in the UK. As the Greers return we are thankful for the growth and maturity of their ministry among us over the past seven years and we look forward to a season of strong and happy ministry that will lead up to the culmination of their role as pastor at the end of this year. We also wait with anticipation to know how and whom God will provide as pastor to lead us into the new year of 2017.

"Autumn is a time of remembrance, celebration and anticipation of God’s faithfulness to His creation and to His new creation, the church. May the words of Isaiah 43:19 instill excitement in our hearts as we follow God’s faithful leading –

'For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.'

"Happy October!"

September 2016

Heart Condition
Randy Odom writes, "In September I am looking forward starting our new five-week message series. Five of us will be sharing messages with us on the themes - “Guard Your Heart,” “Blinders of the Heart,” “Battle for the Heart,” “A New Heart” and “Following God’s Heart.”

"According to the World Health Organization (WHO), heart disease is "the number 1 cause of death globally: more people die annually from heart disease than from any other cause. An estimated 17.5 million people died from heart disease in 2012, representing 31% of all global deaths.” These statistics are staggering!

"Humanity’s spiritual heart is in even worse condition. Jeremiah 17:9 says, "The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?” Thankfully, as followers of Jesus, not only do we know that our Great Physician has diagnosed the extent of our spiritual heart condition, but He has taken the steps necessary not just to cure our sin-diseased heart, but to give us a “heart transplant.” "I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart” Jeremiah 36:26.

"As we look together at God’s Word for the next five weeks, let’s ask Him to reveal those places in our hearts where we still need work and let’s surrender to the merciful and skillful scalpel of His Holy Spirit as He creates in each one of us a pure heart."

International Church Pastor Vacancy – Siem Reap, Cambodia

The Christian Fellowship of Siem Reap (CFSR) is celebrating its first 10 years as a vibrant international church community in northern Cambodia.

CFSR is advertising a vacancy for a new missionary pastor. The present pastor (Ivor Greer) will be standing down at the end of 2016 after serving for seven years.

The next pastor has an opportunity to guide CFSR’s future development as it seeks to fulfil its mission among the growing international community in Siem Reap:

“Providing fellowship, nurture and outreach for the English speaking community of Siem Reap”

Enquiries are welcome from those who:

  • have experience of, and are passionate about, cross-cultural ministry; and
  • have been a pastor or leader of a church for at least three years.

Please respond by email to cfsrsearch16@yahoo.com . Enquiries (including an up-to-date CV and an indication of a possible starting date) should be submitted to this email address before September 9th 2016.

July 2016

Acts 2:42 The Believers Form a Community
42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper) and to prayer.

When I first preached in CFSR in 2009, I spoke from this passage. It summarises what a Church is “all about”. We are a Community; we believe passionately in the word of God (the Apostles’ teaching); we need each other’s fellowship and support (often sharing meals together—and, each month, meeting for the Lord’s Supper); and we desperately need to pray.

I have been encouraged as we have come together as the CFSR Community over recent weeks to pray (in one place at our house on Wednesdays at 7pm; and just where we are at 8pm for five minutes each evening). We need prayer as we seek God’s will for the way forward for our “local, international church”.

John 13 34 So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. 35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

We need also to be aware of “the world” where God has placed us. For many our first “calling” is to disciple and build up the Khmer church. But we are being watched—every day—by those who (like us) are also “strangers in a foreign land”. There are many “English speakers” in Siem Reap who need to hear the Good News—an unreached people group.
That is why our Mission Statement has a threefold purpose.
"Providing fellowship, nurture and outreach to the English-speaking community of Siem Reap."

April 2016

“New Beginnings”
April in Cambodia is remembered for a number of reasons – it is usually very hot. The “cool” season has passed and the rains of the next wet season are still a long way off! It is also the time of “Khmer New Year”. This three-day festival starts on 13th April and is the biggest holiday in Cambodia. It is a time for families, for giving and for new beginnings.
In Angkorian times, New Year used to be the first day of the first lunar month. Then one of the kings adopted the solar calendar and changed it to the present timing. April was after the previous year’s harvest had been stored and well before the new rains so the farmers had more time to celebrate.
It is good for all of us to take time to celebrate – to enjoy a break with friends or family, to reflect on what God has done in our lives and to look forward to new beginnings. For many that will mean time away from Cambodia or, maybe, just away from Siem Reap. For others, it will be time to change our routine and reflect on God’s goodness while remaining at home. Perhaps, both individually and collectively, there may also be “new beginnings”?

Isaiah 43:19
For I am about to do something new.
See, I have already begun! Do you not see it?
I will make a pathway through the wilderness.
I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.

During April in CFSR we will be hearing stories – lessons of God’s grace in our lives; and challenges from the Lord Jesus – and then, at the end of the month, we will be starting a new series. We will be looking at God’s plan and purpose for Joshua and the people of Israel as they entered the Promised Land.
As a Leadership, we have been seeking God and reviewing the ministry of CFSR over the first, nearly, 10 years. What does God want of us – and for us – as an international, but also local, church in Siem Reap as we move forward?
We need to involve the whole Church Family in this process and on Sunday 24th April, we will be sharing the way God has spoken to us. There will be information to enable us to begin an ongoing process of praying and discussing the way ahead. What does God want of each of us in CFSR as we journey on in Siem Reap? Be prayerful and expectant.

March 2016

Relationships
Throughout March we will continue to explore what the Bible has to say about relationships and love.
We will explore the "Great Commandment" as we consider how to love God with all our heart and mind and soul and strength; how to have that right attitude of love for our family; and consider how we could ever comprehend the love of Jesus for us. Pray that our reflections at Easter will help us to have a deeper relationship with our risen Lord.

February 2016

Relationships
As we move into February some of us may be excited about the prospect of St Valentine's Day (especially as this is a "leap year"). We will finish our "Limitless Living" series and then start our Lent Series as we lead up to Easter (coming early in 2016 at the end of March!). This year we will be looking at some of the things the Bible has to say about relationships and love.
We will dip briefly into the love song of Solomon (Song of Songs); look at the implications of the "New Commandment" that Jesus brings to us in John 15; then explore the "Great Commandment" expounded by Jesus in Luke 10.
Pray that the Holy Spirit will bring to all of us fresh insights as together we explore some familiar (and, maybe, not so familiar) passages this month.

January 2016

A New year for “Limitless Living”
As we move into 2016 none of us know what it holds – for us personally or as a body of God's people in Siem Reap. But we do know who "holds the future". This thought is picked up in a now-famous poem quoted by British King George VI in his first Christmas radio message at the beginning of the Second World War:
And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:
“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”
And he replied: “Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”
So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night.

But sometimes our lack of faith can mean that we "limit" God. We see Him as less than he is and fail to grasp the significance of what Jesus said in John 10:10: "I came that they may have life and have it abundantly."
In a short series "Limitless Living" from 17th January we will be exploring this theme looking specifically at "faith", "grace", "wisdom" and "light".

December 2015

ADVENT—A time of preparation
The word Advent means "coming" or "arrival." The focus is the celebration of the birth of Jesus—the First Advent; and the anticipation of the return of Christ—his Second Advent.
Advent is more than marking a historical event, it is celebrating a truth about God; the revelation of God in Christ whereby all of creation might be reconciled to God. In this double focus on past and future, Advent can remind us of our own spiritual journey.
During this month, our teaching, our readings and our carols will reflect that Christ has come, that He is present in the world today, and that He will come again in power.
Our Carol service, on Sunday 13th December, will be a time of hope and celebration. Bring your friends.
We hope to be singing Christmas Carols again just outside the FTB Bank (near Pub Street)—this year on Tuesday 15th December. Please join us at 6:30pm if you can.
Then on Christmas morning (25th) join us at the Pastor’s home (near Psah Sameki) for breakfast at 8am followed by a short family Christmas Celebration.

November 2015

Faith and Doubt - let's be real!
In November we continue to look at some biblical patterns for being “real” with God. We discovered that “doubt” can be an aspect of faith—not the opposite of it. As the writer to the Hebrews reminds us (in 11:1) “... faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
You can continue the dialogue on-line by asking to join the closed group (CFSR Serious Seekers) to post questions, comments and give feedback.
What a privilege (and responsibility) we have in CFSR as we seek to fulfil Jesus’ command to be His witnesses— together and individually—in Siem Reap.
At the end of the month we will begin our preparation for celebrating Christ’s coming at the first Christmas with our Advent Series.

October 2015

Last month Randy spoke about what to do when doubts come when looking at Peter's response to Jesus in John 6. This struck a chord with several people and for the next few weeks of teaching on Sundays, we will look at some biblical patterns for being “real” with God. We will also hear personal testimonies on this theme (so if anyone would like to share about their experience then speak to Pastor Ivor) On 25th October we will celebrate CFSR’s nine years. We will continue the “real” theme again by reviewing the nature of “church” and considering “Are we a real church?”
What a privilege (and responsibility) we have in CFSR as we seek to fulfil Jesus’ command to be His witnesses— together and individually—in Siem Reap.

September 2015

In September we conclude our look at passages in John’s gospel recording the words of Jesus. When "many of his disciples went away in John 6 (see verse 66), Jesus turned to the twelve and said "Do you want to go as well?" So we finish the series with the challenge of Peter in verse 68 "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life".
We then will turn to the Old Testament and the prophet Joel for a short series.

August 2015

“The 'I am's' of Jesus”
In August we continue to look at passages in John’s gospel recording the words of Jesus. As we read through John, we find 8 different conversations in which Jesus makes very specific, far reaching, outrageous statements about himself. Jesus does not only claim to know these things. He blatantly claims that He is these things. If true, the implications, and impact are tremendous. The implications reach deep into our real, daily lives.
The impact involves life-changing transformation with everlasting consequences. Pray that each of us will be challenged week by week.
